About us
Legend has it that in 1929, the “poor boy” was created by the Martin brothers, who came up with the simple but hearty sandwich when the Amalgamated Association of Electric Street Railway Employees went on strike, sending over a thousand unionized workers off the job and onto the picket line. The Martin brothers gave away sandwiches to the strikers that usually consisted of gravy and spare bits of roast beef on French baguettes. The story goes that when a striking union member walked into their restaurant, Benny would call to Clovis, “Here comes another poor boy!” And so, the legend was born.
The brothers needed a long loaf of traditional french bread that would be easy to slice and provide many sandwiches per loaf. John Gendusa stepped up, and the french loaf we know and love today was born.

History of the poor boy
Monica landry
owner / chef / streetcar conductor
Monica Landry aka "Mama Mo" inherited her nickname from those she cooked for throughout the years. It has become her trademark. Her wonderful creations have elicited many an emotional connection reminding folks of home and the dishes they were raised on. Little did she know years later the smiles, conversations, and laughter that her food brought would become something life changing!
Although she was born and raised in Houston, Texas, her roots stem from Louisiana. Her memories run deep from a very young girl eating Creole and Cajun dishes which have stuck with her throughout the years. Now she wants to present them to you with her own twist.
Monica is a firm believer in having passion in everything you do. And the key to being successful in anything is to love the thing you are doing. There’s no deny that cooking does that for her, it’s in her DNA.

garfield landry
owner / CTO, CIO, COO and some other O's!
Garfield, spent many years of his youth working in the service industry until his college ED in Information Systems forced him to work as an Information Systems manager. Later, his years spent as a working musician brought him back into that world of restaurants and bars.
He was fully onboard working with Mama Mo to create a business they could call their own using the many years of experience they shared between them. 1929 PBK is the result of that decision. And it is certainly not the end.
